TRAFFIC RULES IN NETHERLANDS

Don’t let an unexpected fine spoil your trip to Assen for the World Superbike racing weekend. Follow these tips to enjoy the event at TT Circuit Assen without incurring unnecessary costs.

Basic rules

Driving Side: In the Netherlands, vehicles drive on the right, and overtaking is done on the left.
Seat Belts: Mandatory for all passengers, both front and rear.
Speed Limits:

• Urban areas: 50 km/h (31 mph)
• Non-urban areas: 80 km/h (50 mph)
• Motorways: 100 km/h (62 mph) during the day (06:00–19:00) and 120–130 km/h (75–81 mph) at night (19:00–06:00). Always follow local signage, as limits may vary.

Alcohol and phone use

• Alcohol Limit: The maximum blood alcohol level is 0.05% for experienced drivers and 0.02% for novice drivers (those with less than 5 years of driving experience).
• Mobile Phones: Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited unless using a hands-free device.

Children

• Children under 1.35 metres (4.4 feet) must travel in an approved child seat.
• Children taller than 1.35 metres must wear a seat belt.

Right of way and roundabouts

• Priority Rules: Vehicles coming from the right generally have priority unless indicated otherwise.
• Roundabouts: Drivers inside the roundabout usually have priority unless signs state otherwise.

Toll roads

The Netherlands does not have a widespread toll system for its national roads and highways. However, there are exceptions, such as the Kiltunnel and the Westerschelde Tunnel, where tolls apply.

Parking

Pay attention to marked parking zones. In these areas, you’ll need to display a parking disc (available at petrol stations or supermarkets) showing your arrival time. These zones often have time restrictions, so be sure to check the signs.
